Urban Environmental Park
Environmental sustainability takes a front seat on campus with new lake/park area
In just a few months, Birmingham-Southern will have a “little paradise” on the western rim of campus, but this paradise will serve as an educational and community resource to support the college’s new Urban Environmental Studies major as well as a place of leisure and recreation for students.
The initial phases of construction for BSC’s new Urban Environmental Park are expected to be completed by late August 2009. The donor-funded park will be comprised of a lake, amphitheatre, walkways, landscape planting, rain gardens for storm water management, and all-exterior lighting. It will be both a leisure-time and recreational activity for students and an academic laboratory/outdoor classroom for UES majors.![]()
The park is located on the west end of campus between the residence hall quad and the intramural fields (on the site that formerly housed old fraternity row). It is being constructed by Johnson Kreis Construction Co., the general contractors who also renovated BSC’s parking lot H and completed phase II of the college’s new Panther Stadium.
Follow the final stages of construction over the summer weekly at this Web page.
